Devon Wilson, 23, of Battle Creek, Michigan is part of a rising tide of millennial farmers. The 2017 Census of Agriculture revealed growth in the number of farmers under 35 for just the second time in the last century. The data also found that 95% of farm producers are white. Fewer than 1% were "more than one race," like Wilson, whose mother is white and father is black.

This summer, Wilson is hosting workshops at his urban farm to inspire others to grow their own food and challenge stereotypes about who a farmer can be. His farm, Sunlight Gardens, is located in Washington Heights—a neighborhood classified as a food desert that Wilson is determined to help transform.
